Catching is the backbone to any successful baseball team at any level. It is a proven fact that outside of pitching, Catching is the fastest way to the big leagues. The reason for this is a combination of talent, knowledge, a complete understanding of the position, and the fact that it is hands down the most difficult position in the game.
What Will We Work On?
Stance and Receiving: We must begin with a solid foundation, our stance must allow us to receive the ball properly and remain “quiet” to show the umpire the strike-zone. We also will learn to understand the importance of our pre-pitch set up and the difference in our stance with runners on vs. no runners on.
Throwing: There are several different ways to improve our “pop-time (catcher’s time on a throw from home plate to 2nd base).” We must allow the player to dictate what we are trying to improve on. Does the player possess a quick-release with an average arm, slow release with a plus arm, poor release and poor arm? Working on our footwork, technique, timing, balance, transfer and arm slot, are some of the ways we can improve our pop-time and throwing in general along with developing our arm-strength.
Blocking: Blocking successfully is 90% the mentality a catcher takes towards practicing blocking. Successful blockers will request pitches in the dirt and are confident in their abilities. Drills ultimately consist of throwing a lot of baseballs in the dirt along with ensuring proper technique. Ultimately we are teaching ourselves how to make blocking easier by understanding the percentages of each situation throughout a game that we could expect a ball in dirt and in what location. (I.E. Generally a right handed curveball is going to be in the dirt moving the catcher to his right. We know this because if he releases early, the pitch will likely be high and inside to a right handed hitter whereas if he releases a little bit late, the ball will be pulled low and away to the side we are expecting).
Miscellaneous: We will also cover pitch calling, run management, game tempo, being the “general,” cut-off requirements, passed ball recovery with a runner on 3rd, bunting defense, hustle plays (beating the runner to 1st on ground-balls), Covering the dish, the value of bullpens, shooters and more.
The Mental Side: The mental side of baseball is the name of the game. This is where we will separate ourselves in our training sessions and practice habits.
